Notes from my reading diary for May, 1999: This novel is at heart a farce: comic rival servants, the comic and sweet dog, the prince in disguise, and powerful deus ex machinas everywhere. Despite occasional efforts to evoke tones of menace or suspense, the book never gets dark. In fact, the efforts to be dark simply don't work. Murder, suicide, boyhood trauma, threatened rape: none of it works. The novel is full of period details but is in no way is period. It is more of a fairy tale in which we wait for the hero and heroine's inevitable happy ending. The courtship dance of the hero and heroine is interesting and funny, but it affirms twentieth-century values, such as all religions are equally valuable; sex is healthy and to be enjoyed; simple tasks such as gardening and cooking are to be valued and prized above less useful things like singing and embroidery; being a business man is acceptable; and there is nothing morally wrong with being an adopted bastard. None of these would be accepted in the Regency, but all are promoted in the novel and sit quite well with the modern-day reader. Grasso's work seems a little like Barbara Metzger's (especially in the use of animals and servants), but with more sexual tension and less ability to shade a work with dark tones.

---. The Unruly Bride. NY: Signet, 1985.

---. Capital Match. An American Regency Romance. NY: Warner Books, 1988.

---. Distant Relations. Coventry Romances 197. NY: Fawcett Coventry, 1982.
