Comments from my reading diary, December 1994: The heroine is amazing: she is fluent in multiple languages, she experiences the horrors of war as a child, her dad is a French spy for the king, she or dad is a book dealer [notes unclear here]. There is much talk of politics and art in the novel. It is the old "guardian loves young ward but must let her have choices" plot. Good tension in plot, evil villain, but villain and his evil isn't featured enough to make the novel depressing.

She meets Keats. Classic triangle plot: heroine meets one hero and one villain; she rather dumbly lets self get engaged to villain. The brother's experience with scums and whores makes an interesting subplot. The ending is sweet.
