Notes from my reading diary, March 1995: This is the charming tale of a widow who knows how to make everyone comfortable, winning love, and settling all her friends' marriages. Cats are a big part of the novel. There are lots of marriages in the plot. It is a good read.

The first generation is scummy--only one happy marriage and the other two are sad. In the first generation, two of the heroines die unhappily. The plot is good, complex, moving, but the sad tone never really goes away.
