Dresses of 1823 from The Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashion, and Politics

Full Evening Dress. I have framed a copy of this image and keep it in my bedroom. I love this woman's graceful style, the way her lace shawl draws attention to her pretty neck and arm and then spills gracefully over the pedestal she leans upon. The gloves have lace edges, and the lady hold a peacock fan. The dress is a brilliant poppy red muslin, trimmed with gold. The bodice is trimmed with vandykes in the military style. The turban is poppy and gold to match Pearls dangle from the lady's ears, and we catch a glimpse of her white satin slippers below the hem of her gown. The spots on the dress which appear black are actually supposed to be gold; the dress is "sprigged" with gold.
