Mademoiselle Duplant (1793)

Copyright held by the Gulbenkian Foundation

This charming dress is very typical of French day dresses of the 1790s. The use of striped fabric was a craze in the early 1790s, first used by men for their coats, then adopted by women. Charlotte Corday supposedly wore such a striped dress when she assassinated Murat. This dress is clearly worn over a corset, given the unnaturally small waist of the woman.
