Court Dresses, 1807-1822

Last Update 25 December 2000

Court Dress, Le Beau Monde, 1807. By 1807, the waist of court dresses had moved up to the height common for dresses, but, since hoops were still required, it was much less attractive. Here a lace-trimmed overskirt covers a dress with bands of flowered garland and a deep lace trim around the bottom of the skirt. The words beneath the print read "COURT DRESSES for His Majesty's Birth Day. Printed for J. B. Bell & Co." John Bell also published La Belle Assemblee, or Bell's court and Fashionable Magazine Addressed Particularly to the Ladies, 1806-1868.

Court Dress, La Belle Assemblee, 1807. The train of this gown is long and heavily embroidered. The bodice is very low cut, showing a great deal of the breasts. The high ruff of lace and "slashed" sleeves imitate Elizabethan fashions.

Court Dress, La Belle Assemblee, January 1808. This court gown is very dramatic in gold and purple with a long purple train with gold fringe.

Left: Court Dress, 1820, from Rudolf Ackermann, The Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashion, and Politics, 1809-1829. A short point lace overdress in pattern of roses, thistle, and shamrock, tops a heavily trimmed blue satin petticoat. The blue satin petticoat has silver lame and foil trims on ever side of a band of white and pale blue roses. The robe is of blue, and the back corsetted. A profusion of ostrich plumes droop over a pearl bandeau.

Right: Court Dress, 1821, by Rudolf Ackermann, The Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashion, and Politics, 1809-1829. White ostrich plumes drape over a diamond bandeau over this gold and white court dress. The gold satin robe is trimmed with gold shells. The white satin petticoat has white lace over it and rows of folds in the satin rimmed with gold cord.

Court Dress, 1822, by Rudolf Ackermann, The Repository of Arts, Literature, Commerce, Manufactures, Fashion, and Politics, 1809-1829. Court dress of pale blue silver lame over a blue satin slip with silver and blue trim. Silver roses are the focus of the trim along the bottom of the slip and train.
