French Frock Coat, 1793

This men's frock coat of green and gold striped silk of 1793 is held by the Musée des Arts de la Mode, Paris (55.31.l). Description in The Age of Napoleon: Costume from Revolution to Empire, 1789-1815., edited by Katell le Bourhis et al. (New York: Metropolitan Museum of Art, 1989) reads: "The redingote, [or frock coat] inspired by English riding clothes, was the new fashionable cut for men's informal coats, and its dashing look was soon adopted by the most stylish Frenchwomen as well. This example, with its typical downturned collar and self-fabric buttons, was worn by a French nobleman, the marquis de Monitny, who was guillotined in 1793" (39). See this page for French fashion plates of the 1790s showing similar male dress and females in clothing using similar striped fabric.
