Fall 1997

This Project counts for 12% of your final grade. The Project is due on October 8. Extensions must be arranged prior to the due date. Emergencies causing lateness will not cause a grade deduction. Late papers will lose 10 points off the final grade of the project on a scale of 100. DO NOT DELAY in arranging for time in the writing center in University Hall, 3rd floor, to complete part 5. It would be helpful as well to have assistance from writing tutors on steps two and three. The Final Project should be submitted in a folder and contain the following:
1) pp. 391 to 395 of Ten Steps or photocopies of these pages, with the exercises "Vocabulary Questions" and "Reading Comprehension Questions" completed

2) A typed summary of the essay "Shyness" pp. 387-391 in Ten Steps. Use the questions on p. 395 to assist you, but do not use the exact wording of the questions. Do not use the exact words of Wolkomir's essay. NO QUOTATIONS are to be used. PARAPHRASES must NOT echo the essay's sentence structure and style. Any use of the exact wording of the text or question and any excessively similar paraphrasing is cheating or plagiarism and will get a grade of F for this segment of the assignment. Summaries must begin with information about the title, author, and publication and the main idea of the essay. Each main point should be mentioned. DO NOT include examples. For an essay of 30 paragraphs, you should write a minimum of 10 sentences and a maximum of 35 sentences.

3) A typed comparison/contrast paragraph of 10 to 20 sentences comparing and contrasting Carol Johnson (paragraphs 1 to 4) and Sylvia Madden (paragraphs 7 to 10). Give explicit examples to prove the similarities and differences between the two women. Make sure your first sentence refers to the title and author of the essay and gives your main idea or thesis.

4) A neatly hand-written or typed sheet with eight sentences of your own creation using the eight vocabulary words on p. 387. Your sentences must use the word in the sense defined on this page, not any other meanings or even parts of speech. The sentences must be grammatical as well to receive full credit.

5) A description or list, SIGNED at the top of the paper BY BOTH YOUR WRITING CENTER TUTOR and yourself (done in the writing center) of the typical stages of your writing process (for example: planning, making notes, outlining, writing, editing, rewriting, typing, and proofreading, etc.). With your writing tutor, write down ideas and suggestions to improve this process (for example: ask my mom to proofread my paper as well as doing it once myself). Project Two

Late papers will lose 10 points off the final grade of the project on a scale of 100. The Final Project should be submitted in a folder and contain the following:
1) pp. 400 to 403 of Ten Steps or photocopies of these pages, with the exercises "Vocabulary Questions" and "Reading Comprehension Questions" completed

2) A typed summary of the essay "False Ideas About Reading" pp. 397 to 400 in Ten Steps. Use the outline exercise on p. 403 to assist you, but do not use the exact wording of the questions. Do not use the exact words of Wolkomir's essay. Quotations may be used but must be in quotation marks after a few words of your own writing and followed by the page number in parenthesis. A sample follows. The Winklers label the first myth, "YOU MUST READ EVERY WORD" (397). Note that the quotation uses the exact capitalization of the text. PARAPHRASES must NOT echo the essay's sentence structure and style. Any use of the exact wording of the text or question (not in direct quotation marks) and any excessively similar paraphrasing is cheating or plagiarism and will get a grade of F for this segment of the assignment. Summaries must begin with information about the title, author, and publication and the main idea of the essay. Each main point should be mentioned. DO NOT include examples. For an essay of 12 paragraphs, you should write a minimum of 8 sentences and a maximum of 24 sentences.

3) According to "False Ideas About Reading," so-called "pleasure reading" has benefits for a person other than simply giving pleasure (see paragraph 1 and 10). Write an argument essay to support the following first sentence and thesis: Pleasure reading has three major benefits in addition to providing simple entertainment. Identify three additional benefits (which may be the same as those the Winklers identify). Write three "main- point" sentences expressing these three benefits and give at least two examples to support each benefit. Arrange your three sections in a logical order, such as least important to most important benefit. Write a concluding sentence. Polish and revise, then type and proof your essay. It should be a minimum of ten sentences and a maximum of twenty.

4) A neatly hand-written or typed sheet with eight sentences of your own creation using the eight vocabulary words on p. 397. Your sentences must use the word in the sense defined on this page, not any other meanings or even parts of speech. The sentences must be grammatical as well to receive full credit.

5) A list, SIGNED at the top of the paper BY BOTH YOUR WRITING CENTER TUTOR and yourself (done in the writing center), of specific things (at least four things) you should do in order to be a stronger and more efficient writer. (For example: Write the draft of my paper on Tuesday before I go to work, rather than after I go to work and am tired).
