Spring 1997

Class Meeting Times 11-12:50, Mon. and Wed.
Required Textbooks
Charriere, Isabelle de. Letters of Mistress Henley Published by
Her Friend. Trans. Philip Stewart and Jean Vachð.
MLA Texts and Translations. New York: Modern Language Association, 1993.
Cherryh, C. J. Merchanter's Luck; Rendezvous at Downbelow Station. New York: Daw, 1982.
Langan, John. College Writing Skills with Readings. 5th. ed. New York: McGraw-Hill, 1997.
Discrimination
The school forbids students to harass other students on the basis of "race, color, religion,
ancestry, national origin, age, gender, marital status, persons with disabilities, and medical
condition, Vietnam Era Veterans, and sexual orientation" (San Bernardino Valley College
1994-
5 Catalog 11). Note that the inclusion of "sexual orientation" means that no anti-homosexual
or
anti-heterosexual comments are permitted in class!
Cheating
If you use another person's ideas or words without saying that the ideas or words are not
yours,
you are cheating. You will receive an F for the assignment and can receive an F for the class
if
the cheating is widespread and malicious.
Drop Policy
The college allows you to drop the course and get a W rather than a grade up until May 9.
If you stop attending class, drop the course before May 9. Otherwise, you will get a grade for
the course, most likely an F, if you have stopped coming to class and doing the work.
Late Work Policy
Late work will be accepted for two weeks after the due date. After two weeks, a zero is
entered
into the grade book and cannot be changed. Note that an F grade is a significant number of
points more than a zero. Late work turned in during the two weeks after the due date will lose
5
points out of 100 unless you have what I think is a reasonable excuse. Certain assignments
cannot be late; these are noted, and a zero is entered if the assignment is not done by the due
date.
Attendance Policy
If you miss 1 month of class (4 weeks, 8 classes), you will not receive a passing grade (C or
above).
Paper Policy
1. All papers must be double-spaced, or they lose 5 points out of 100.
2. All paper must have a title, or they lose 5 points out of 100.
3. All papers must be typed, or they lose 10 points out of 100.
4. Papers without a thesis will lose 5 points out of 100.
5. Papers with over 25 grammatical errors on any one page lose 10 points out of 100.
6. All papers that use a source must include an MLA-style bibliography, or they lose 5 points
out
of a hundred.
Homework Policy
Have all homework ready to be turned in. If you do not wish to tear pages out of your
textbook,
do your homework on separate paper.
Grading Policy
Writing Assignments 60%
Other Homework and Class Participation 30%
Final Exam 10%
